Listen to a fishing boat captain argue for the school budget, or truck driver speak like Demosthenes. You can have a say in how much you pay for taxes, and whether it is worth the money to hire a new librarian or buy a new fire truck.

Each town has its own flavor, and its advantages as a place to live.
