Box Office Domination: 'Avatar 3' Still #1! 'Primate' & 'Greenland 2' Opening Weekend (2026)

Box Office: 'Primate' Debuts Strong, 'Avatar 3' Maintains Top Spot

The sci-fi blockbuster 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' continues its box office dominance, securing the top position for a fourth consecutive Friday. This impressive feat comes as the third installment in the Avatar franchise recently surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

On Friday, the film collected $5 million domestically, with projections indicating an additional $20 million by Sunday. The film's success is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Avatar universe, captivating audiences with its groundbreaking visuals and immersive storytelling.

In second place, Paramount's creature feature 'Primate' made a strong debut, attracting $4.5 million from 2,964 North American theaters. The horror film, starring Johnny Sequoyah, Jess Alexander, Troy Kotsur, and Victoria Wyant, tells the story of a group of teens whose island getaway takes a dark turn when their beloved pet chimpanzee becomes a rabid killing machine. With a production budget of $21 million, the film is expected to generate $11 million domestically by Sunday, showcasing the potential for successful genre films.

Also opening this weekend is Lionsgate's survival thriller 'Greenland 2: Migration,' starring Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roman Griffin Davis. The film pulled in $3.2 million on its opening Friday, marking its release approximately six years after the original. The sequel follows a family's journey to find a new home in Greenland after a catastrophic comet strike devastates Earth. With projections of $8.5 million by Sunday, the film is poised to resonate with audiences seeking thrilling escapism.

Despite the strong debut of 'Primate' and the ongoing success of 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' two other holdovers maintained their positions in the top five on Friday. A24's ping pong drama 'Marty Supreme' and Lionsgate's twisty domestic thriller 'The Housemaid' continued to attract audiences. 'Marty Supreme' generated approximately $2.2 million domestically on Friday, experiencing a 52% drop from the previous week, but is projected to reach a substantial domestic gross of $70 million by the end of the weekend. 'The Housemaid' collected $3.3 million on its fourth Friday, with projections indicating a decline of 30% from the previous week, resulting in a total domestic gross of $93.5 million.
